"If I had to describe what it is that makes my works emblematic, I'd say it's my working method." Since he early 1970s when he began his series Conjunction, artist Ha Chong-Hyun has been developing a unique approach that he calls "bae-ap-bub," meaning "back-pressure method." This involves him applying the paint from the back of a loosely woven hemp canvas.


The paint mingles with the fibers and shows through on the other side. He then lights a fire underneath the canvas, which deposits a fine layer of soot on it, before he applies more paint using the same technique.The appearance of the front of the canvas depends on the pressure he exerts, his gestures, the implement he uses, the quantity of paint, and gravity..


  • Lee Kun-Young

A major figure within the Korean avant-garde movement, Lee Kun-Yong is a painter, pioneering performance artist, and founding member of the artist group Space and Time (1969-80) which experimented with relationships between art,space,and the body.


His series Body Scape, begun in 1976 and still ongoing, is a set of paintings generated by an interaction between his body and the support. The method consists of engaging with the canvas from a different physical posture each time and then letting the gesture flow freely.
